Good News! Good News!!!

We found out that St Albans School has won the Jewelled Gecko Award. We will receive a trophy and $1000.  Well done to everyone.

Judges’ Report 

..St Albans School.. 

St Albans School presented an outstanding entry. The judges were extremely impressed with how engaged the children were with many projects and their knowledge of environmental issues, impacts, and ways to care for and improve our environment. 

The level of understanding of the importance of recycling, vegetable-growing, and reinforcing environmental awareness was extensive and well evident school wide. 

The level of preparation for the presentation for our visit was excellent. The presenters were articulate, confident, and well-researched and prepared. The multimedia approach showed initiative, creativity, and flair. 

The judges would like to identify the aspects of the project and presentation which particularly impressed them: 

 The Eco Warriors initiative. This is a novel and effective approach to identifying and rewarding good work for the environment. We particularly liked the use of badges, the blog, and of course the Eco Warrior Girl concept – great fun! 

 The tree stickers for photocopy paper use – very visual, well presented and very effective 

 The paper bag face and his messages on the video – very effective ... and cute!! 

 Wombling – again, fun and cute ... and of course, effective 

 Wonderful George – says it all! 

 Green Fingers Club – it was great to see so many pupils interested in gardening. 

 Mufti Day to raise money for the worm farm 

 Pig buckets and your online presentation about the hungry Kunekune pigs. 

 Garden shed – the way you reused the redundant sports shed so the eco club could store more gear and therefore allow more children to get involved. 

 Radio station – what an impressive setup and what a good way to remind the children about recycling! 

 Reminder stickers on the door of the photocopier room to remind teachers about not wasting paper 

 So much of the environmental project work is being carried out so willingly and voluntarily in the children’s own time. 

Overall comment 

What an absolute pleasure it was to visit St Albans School and learn about your environmental projects in such a varied, interesting, informative and extremely well-prepared and presented way. The level of environmental engagement and awareness demonstrated by the children is an absolute credit to you all – to the children for showing such genuine interest and enthusiasm and of course to the staff for developing and nurturing the children’s interest, awareness and care for the environment. 

Outstanding. Well done to everyone. Congratulations to you all.

New Worm Farm

Some are brave and like the hold these special worms called tiger worms.

Our new worm farm aka The Beast was purchased from Earthly Delights with the money raised from our mufti day in Term 3.

The worms looking happy and well fed in their new home.

In term four 10 classes will be collecting their food scraps for a local pig farmer. Wonderful Nikki brought Wombat to some of the junior classes for a visit.

Room 21 wrote some stories about the visit.

I love the pig. It is cute. He sleeps in a basket with a dog and I love him. Emily L

We had a pig at school. His name was Wombat. He came with Nikki. Wombat likes eating apple and cheese. We petted him and we scratched him. I wish he was here every time. Jada-Lee

We had a visitor with a piglet at school. It was so exciting to have a pig over. I got to pat it. It’s names was Wombat. Then Wombat went to room three. Jamie

I like the pig. He was good. He licked me. His name was Wombat. Swastik

I like Wombat. He was so cute. Wombat liked me. I liked giving him apple and cheese. It was fun giving him apple and cheese. It was lots of fun today. I hope Wombat will come on Wednesday. I’m happy. I think I love Wombat. Sophia

Wombat is a boy/male. His fur is ginger and his tail is straight. His sisters went to their new home. He licks the cats ears and its tail. He was 2 months old. Jesse

Today Wombat came. Wombat likes me. I gave him apple and cheese. He went around. I liked it. Wombat likes Palm and Jamie too. Why does the pig have a long tail or a round tail? I love it. Sabina

“It’s a pig” we all shouted. The pig’s name was Wombat. He’s only 2 months old. He sneaks up on the cat and licks its ears. Wombat is a male. We fed him apples and cheese. His owner is Nikki. He sleeps in a basket next too a puppy. Libby

I thought the pig was cute and I liked Wombat. I like apple just like Wombat. Wombat likes cheese and I don’t like cheese. I love Wombat. Ethan

Today Nikki came in with a piglet. It was called Wombat. We got to feed him. The piglet was a boy. He was so cute. Did you like the pig? I liked he piglet. The pig had ginger hair. When he wags his tail he is happy. Aliana

Today a kune kune piglet who was only two months old came into our class. A pig farmer named Nikki brought the pig round. The piglets name was Wombat. Wombat liked me. Bella
